Excel > PDF garbled text

Reencountering a problem I used to have upon exporting charts from Excel (2004 or 2011), they appear fine as a pdf, but import them into Illustrator and the text is garbled. I solved the problem by doing exporting on Windows, but I can't be bothered switching pc/starting VM just for that.

Always messed up, no matter if Save as PDF, Print as PDF or export as PDF (right click on chart > export picture > pdf).

Any ideas?

If you find out what's happening then I'd appreciate hearing as I'm having the same issue.

I've also checked it using the MS Word Save As... pdf option and it also happens.

Apparently it's something to do with the MS pdf/copy output (ie. not limited to excel).
