I am setting up a medel of our work network and have got 5 servers up and running with server 2003 SP2 including an ISA server, 1 domain controller setup as the frontend exchange server, 1 domain controller as a backend (setup as if on another site) and one as a virus server running Trend IMSS to scan emails going in and out.

I can send an email from a workstation and it get passed to the backend server and then to the frontend server and then passed to the IMSS where it sits in the retry queue. Before I installed the IMSS software on the virus server the emails sat in the queue on the frontend server.
All I can think of is that the ISA just doesn't know where to send it next, the isa server is set to allow all traffic out.

Any ideas on what could be stopping emails getting out?

Thanks

Your discription is a little confusing.......

by Frontend server you mean OWA? and your sending the email from OWA or Outlook?
the way I understand it, he means that all mail is sitting backing up in a queue on the filter. Sophos has a habit of dieing on mimesweeper etc and needs reinstalling as it works combined, I posted thinking it was maybe something similar.

I garee, it is a bit confusing. A front end server is usually just an interface for OWA or for outlook using RPC over HTTP. All the front end server does is provide a connection to the back end server.

Make sure your mail gateway is configured properly (ie, the smtp gateway is pointing at an internet connection). Also, you haven't got naything block port 25 (SMTP) have you as this will cause havoc.
