Has anyone rolled out this to their work servers yet? We are on 2003 at the moment and purchased a new Dell PE 2950 (IIRC) with Windows 2003 64x But..... Our FD has put hold on purchases until further notice :( So we have the server but not the exchange 2007!

Where it gets complicated is the current hardware our exchange is on is about to expire so we HAVE to move it off that server. And exchange 2007 is only 64 bit only and Exchange 2003 doesn’t support 64bit OS.

So we’ll have to flatten our new 2950 64bit PE install Windows 2003 32bit then move the mailboxes onto that server.

Then when we can purchase Exchange 2007 bring the old exchange server back out move the mailboxes back onto there for a couple of days then rebuild the new 2950 with 64bit 2003 and move back.

Anyone else going through a strange exchange upgrades? Well I say that but you can't do a inline upgrade.

I'm sure there was another topic on there which I responded to but who cares.. :)

I've done a few Exchange 2003 to 2007 migrations (though not on the same box - that wouldn't be fun as it's a complete O/S reinstallation).

The main thing that is a pain at the moment is that all accounts have to be setupi in Exchange rather than the Active Directory (this will be until Windows 2008 is out).

It's very easy to setup and remerge (exmerge or another tool) the data. I would suggest running the installation side-by-side but this is not possible in your organisation so I'd suggest you make sure you have everything exported (Public Folders / etc). and then go for it. It's not that hard.

You can't do a inplace migration. It doesnt support it so its a new install only.

Doubt we'll have Windows 2008 so thats noted.

my budgets still not signed off :(

Trying to get rid of my last few Win2K servers but looks like they will have to last another year

Part way through transitioning (MS use the term migration for moving from A.N.Other platform to Exchange or from Exchange to Exchange without keeping any of your config) from 2003 to 2007.

All the Public Folders and mailboxes are on 2007 now. Getting ActiveSync / DirectPush setup for our WM & Nokia devices took a bit of effort. http://www.sembee.co.uk/archive/2007/01/21/34.aspx is a good help.

Then I just need to redirect inbound SMTP and double check everything before retiring our Exchange 2003 box.

We have it on one of the mail servers here, the management console is horrible compared to 2003!

It's not that bad. Once you've gone through it a couple of times you know where everything is and most of it is logical. I do like the troubleshooting Wizard as well which is great at finding faults.

Definately a good product though. I'm looking forward to Server 2008 so we can deploy it properly.

Im investigating a move to exchange 2007 at work

Currently got 1 exch 2003 svr with 500 odd mailboxes, thats our main mail server
2 Exch2007 servers with around 50 mailboxes, and routing group connectors to the 2003 server.

Going to prove a pain in the arse going round 25 separate sites changing office outlook settings im guessing :(

I'm in the other boat Dangerous, I have the software but not the hardware :p

Got Software Assurance with Exchange & Windows so IF I had the servers I could upgrade to both....

As in when you move the mailboxes from 2003 to 2007? If so, Outlook will automatically update the server name in the users profile (as long as the old server is still online) when the user fires up Outlook.

I didn't have to visit any PCs after moving mailboxes from 03 to 07.

my and my friend from here just did the following

migrate an SBS 2003 server running exchange 2003 to a separate system running Server 2003 x64 R2 running exchange 2007

Turns out the previous way of importing psts into exchange (exmerge) has been discontinued.

It still works to export from exchange 2003, but you have to use a different procedure to import them back into exchange 2007.

if you're flattenning your machine, i cant see any other way of doing it, other than exporting everything to PST and importing back again.

we couldnt find any other way of importing the data back in. Other than by following this

http://msexchangeteam.com/archive/2007/04/13/437745.aspx

using a client machine with exchange tools installed. As apparently exmerge isnt supported in Exchange 2007 anymore

If anybody knows different to the above, we'd have love to have known last weekend when we did this :D

How about a virtual server?

Convert the existing Exchange 2003 box to a virtual machine and then host it in a 32-bit VM on the new server. Gives you some breathing space before a properly considered and planned migration to 2007 in the future.

we had to do this

thankfully its a piece of cake. Outlook picks up all the settings itself. Just literally click on next .. next a lot

end users prob wont be able to do it. But it only takes seconds so its relatively easy

the way we got round it was with roaming profiles and logging on as each user and adding in the exchange data to their roaming profile so outlook was all setup when they logged on.

I'm in the process of migrating from a linux based exim4 mail server to exchange 2007 which is due to go live over the weekend. We have about 100 users currently using pop3 with outlook 2000. Can't see any way of automating the change of outlook account settings so I'm not looking forward doing it all manually on monday :(

Loads of wise to do doing this automatically :) Just google.

As i am lazy i would probaly use the logon script to use a prf to change the outlook profile although i am sure there are more elegant ways of doing

Ever thought of virtualising a Windows 2003 server on that box instead of formatting - pretty sure the OS and the hardware have acceleration for that. Vanderpool technology I think it is called.

Jon Honeyball writes for PC Pro magazine in the Real World Computing column and always seems to be taking about virtual servers and how brilliant they are.

Any way worth a think about might save you having to kill the preinstall....

come on dangerous, i want a responce to this as imho you are one the most respected windows admins on the forums

edit: got my budget signed off for some PE2950s; i wanted DL380s but these are 40% cheaper

There’s no way we would virtualised our exchange server as it’s too important and anyway what would it save? Hour of hours on reinstall? No Point IMHO.

And it would cause massive problems on when we bought 2007 because we'd need both servers online to start the migrate of mailboxes.
