When a user sends a message to a group (in this case Reception) a bounce back message comes back to the original sender saying they cannot deliver to a mailbox.

The mailbox hasn't existed for some time and the name is not in the group or anywhere. Why does it still try and send to the mailbox ??

The e-mail account does not exist at the organization this message was sent to. Check the e-mail address, or contact the recipient directly to find out the correct address.

the user account and mailbox need to be recreated (in the same administrative group), removed from the distribution groups and then deleted again.

Best practices for AD are to remove users from groups before deleting the account - or this happens from time to time.

EDIT: Also use ADSIEdit to find out who has permissions on the mailbox and remove them.

I thought that we did that as well (best practices after all) - until I came across this problem. Problem got passed to us, I fixed it and swiftly had the account admin guys change their practices.

Probably still get a few users deleted without group / mailbox delegation removed though - but you only see this problem once in a few hundred account deletions.
