$ exchange rate.

Am I missing something here?

http://www.xe.com/

£1 = $1.97160

Not 1.92.
That is the spot rate, the rate which is being traded at the moment on the forex (foreign exchange) market. Retailers/bureaus apply a margin (and as you can see now, 1.97-1.92 is fairly large) to make a profit. However, even they won't be getting the spot rate. It's all a chain of profit-making.

Going to Vegas in August too - Mini OCUK meet :)

I'm looking at getting some $ soon, maybe just £500 worth then if the rate starts to drop i'll get £500 more, but if it starts to rise i'll leave it till last minute.

get travellers checks
they are taken literally just about everywhere and they're insured against loss/theft/etc....always take travellers cheques to the states!

Get a nationwide or post office credit card. They don't charge you for currency conversion so any spend on it will be at the daily rate (i.e. $1.97).

If you have a nationwide debit card you can also withdraw from ATMs in the US without fees (apart from in a Casino/strip club where they have mega fees).

Nationwide don't charge fees but I have yet to find one in Vegas where the US bank/operator does not charge you

The rate will drop when it comes to summer due to supply and demand. the rate will be closer to 1.8X than 2.XX all because of the summer holidays.

Washington Mutual bank (WaMU) in Vegas & in the whole of the US should give you no-fee Visa withdrawals at $1.98.

Why the LOL, i worked on the beurre de change for two years, and every holiday the rate would drop, the euro being worse, but the dollar still dropped.

in june the euro would be 1.45 by end of july, start of august the rate would be 1.38

My guess would be something along the lines of a global recession which is being led by the US - this may lead to a buck in the trend that has happened over the last 2 years :p

None of those are anywhere near the tourist areas :D

All i am saying is, that after the holidays the rate would go back up to what they were before the holidays, every time.

You will probably get better rates now, than you will in August, but then a change of 0.05 will not make that much of a difference to the price anyway.

In a bureau de change they probably jack their margins up in holiday times but the demand for holiday travel currency will have almost zero effect on the relative values of the currencies on the world market.
