Exchange Server

What way does apple mail server work then guys?? We were looking at getting a mac mini server with osx snow leopard server but then we thought about exchange.

It might be worth looking at again as it sounds like exchange can be rather exspensive especially when adding extra cals and things like that.

What way does licsencing work on apple mail server then because we could probably buy a mac mini server with osx server and do it that way

Laptop HDDs, desktop CPUs and RAM with no ECC and no redundancy hosting a mail server? Urgh, rather you than me.

If your clients are all Mac, then I'd probably use OSX for compatibility but, like any server, I'd want it on proper hardware

Ditto, I'd want a proper xserve, however two mac mini's with some sort of redundant failover will probably be "enough" for a small business.

I'm not sure how it "works" however as I've not been in a position to use Apple Mail Server before.

Do you need active directory for either of these to work??

We have no real need for active directory at the minute as we are running multiple platforms but we need to get a new mail server ASAP as, I I said before hmail is rubbish.

Ok if i install active directory can people outside the AD still access mail say one of my macs at home using entourage or something if it has the right server details?

Yes and no. They don't need a machine that is tied into the AD, but they do need AD credentials so you'll still have to manage all the users.

Ok i think i get it now mate cheers, going to install sbs 2008 trial this week so i will let you know how i get on, bnut we may go down the apple mail server route.
