Hi guys,

I joined a gym a couple of weeks ago and have been going most days. Yesterday I went straight after work for about 45 mins at about 5pm. At 8pm I went out with a few mates to the pub and stayed until about midnight. I had probably 7 pints which is quite normal for me and I felt OK when I left. When I got home though I was sick a couple of times and I had a really bad hangover this morning.

I'm not looking for medical advice or anything (I know that's not allowed!) and I feel fine now, but I was wondering if exercising changes your alcohol tolerance levels?

Well to be honest it's most likely to do with dehydration, excersise dehydrates you and so does alcohol which is probably why you felt so crap.

Also your body probably needed energy (lack of food) which is why it couldn't break down the alcohol as efficiently.

as said, your energy reserves and water levels will be at a low.

not surprised you didnt feel so hot after 7 pints after training..

Excercise also increases your metabolic rate, you'll process the alchohol faster, it'll hit your harder. An increased metabolic rate will also stimulate your appetite a rather large amount, and if you haven't eaten much, well :)

I thought it might be something to do with metabolism! I guess I'll be taking it easier on pub nights after having been to the gym from now on!

I'd recommend cutting right down on all your alchohil intake mate. It impedes your body's ability to build muscle and will lessen your fitness. It also puts additional stress on the heart and other internal organs, which, considering you're trying to get fitter, is rather counter-productive.

Also, as you're drinking calories, you'll mess with your metabolism, and, although you'll find testaments that disagree, you'll also find it harder to loose weight, or maintain your current fat%

Its probably down to body fat levels. Obviously if you exercise a lot your body fat levels decrease and most likely your resistance to alcohol.

*Edit* scrap that it appears that having more body fat leads to you getting drunk quicker (as in the case of women), although is you lose fat you will lose body mass which will effect how alcohol effects you. I would have thought a faster metabolism would process alcohol quicker so you'd be less effected by it, but i may be incorrect about that.

OK thanks for the advice. I'm only drinking like that 1 night a week and am eating healthily and not drinking much alcohol for the rest of it.

Hardly, a large amount of alchohol would take quite some time to be processed. Hence how after big nights out you can wake up still drunk, and the hangover only hits you later.

if you're not too used to the excercise your system will be feeling low as it's re-building and adjusting, so alcohol might batter you.

migraine was easily achieved for me in a similar situation my memory serves me.

I dont know what your aims are at the gym but going out on the p!ss after a workout is pointless.

Your body needs to recover after it has been worked-out, sleeping is when the muscles grow the most.

I do all my gym time in the week and have the w.ends totally off.

I used to get drunk easier when I went down the gym regularly. I used to put it down to a lower amount of fat on me, not that there's much of me anyway.

I'm going monday - friday and having saturday and sundays off. I'm trying to lose a little weight (maybe a stone) but really I'm just trying to get fitter. It's not like I'm going down the pub every night after gym though, it was only on Friday.
