Ok I am not the smallest guy on the block by far, and last year I had some mates about the same size. They went down to lanky again just by spending a summer on an exercise bike and I have been trying to do the same. Basically I am asking here about techniques (spelling?) and distances. How much do people do to start with and do people just work up to it or start pushing themselves. My main problem at the moment is that after about 5 or 10KM my joints on my legs start to hurt and I need a rest. So atm I have been trying about 10km a day.
What do people suggest here? do 10km, rest then do some more later in the day, or keep trying 10km a day until it gets easier?

Dont use an exercise bike but use a turbo trainer instead.
The worst session i do for making the muscles hurt is 8 minutes at 75rpm in a high gear ie grinding the gears.
Can spin at 100rpm+ in lower gears for the same time or longer with no problems.
I was following a training plan to get fit for Time Trialing so my turbo sessions were about building endurance and power.

Spinning is a lot easier on the body in general, so much so that even when im out on the road tend not to use the big chain ring unless im doing mini TT sessions.
