For now I cant get to a welder to spatter weld over the hole (not that I know where it is or how big it is) but its definitely blowing, distinct blowing noise coming from somewhere before the backbox (this is listening from the drivers seat though, need to get out to it with someone else there really).

Ultimately, this spells the end of the exhaust pipe - I suspected the backbox was pretty fubar internally anyway as it makes some "interesting" noises if you kick it (probably a loose/corroded baffle). Not sure how long Lopez has had this pipe though but knowing him, its probably had a good innings ;)

Should I replace it with a cheapo exhaust or should I get something stupid like a straight-through pipe? How far back do noise regulations go? How stupid can I go before it wont pass an MOT?

For those that dont know, its the mk1 mundano made famous by Lopez :p

That's the original exhaust mate, I think 12 years is a bloody good innings :D

There are no noise regs as such for the MOT (ie there is no defined limit in db) but if the tester deems it to be "Excessively noisy" then he can fail it.

:D:D

So, how should I progress? Stainless cat-back with no baffles? How about a kwik-fit special?

Find the hole, then weld it. Stop being a wuss, exhaust should be able to outlast the car if looked after properly. (had this broom 11 years ...)

Well yeah, I could do that, but its a little boring dont you think? :p I actually need to take the pipe off soon anyway so I may as well renew it while I am there.

Ive never really bothered to delve into stainless pipes etc before, anyone care to recommend a place so I can at least scope out prices etc?

Blue Flame or Remus will do you a s/s system but TBH with the exception of the back box baffle then most zorst systems last a long long time* Even if it has a hle they are quickly and easily fixed with minimal cost.

*Unless you own an older Renault then the the main manifold on cylinder one will crack...The rest of the system is fine appart from the stupid flex section that should be removed and re-sealed (bi-)anually or better yet replaced with a solid section. So ends this public service announcment :D

I wonder if Ashley do a system that can be made to fit the Mondeo. It'll certainly be loud if nothing else.

Don't fit a big exhaust to a mundano, you chav.

Get a standard one put back on, jobs a goodun for another 12 years.

I dont want big, I want... something that makes me giggle when I drive it. I drove a car about for "long enough" without any exhaust at all after the manifold - that caused a few grins, I can tell you :D

:o

I'm a chav!

;)

BTW, u didn't hear it at it's best when I had a GSXR600 bike can on it. It was very loud and very burbly, but I realised big exhausts are best on big cars. Hence why I have a nice quiet backbox now and the loud exhaust is on my bike ;)
