Exhaust Noise

I have a scorpion slip-on fitted and I'm considering removing the baffle. Is this street legal? Or does it leave me susceptible to a penalty? I see, and quite often hear without seeing, loud bikes riding around all the time. And seemingly without any issues. Is this just a 'don't get caught' thing?

Depends where you are. If you're making a racket in a sleepy little country village you'll be much more likely to get pulled than riding through central London. That said, I don't think any police carry decibel meters so they've no way to tell you are indeed over the noise limit.

Take it out and see if YOU like it, I had a scorpion can and put the baffle back in as I found it too much. chap at work has a Ducati with no baffles and it is just far too loud, can not hear anything over it!

Take it out and have a listen yourself.
The police have to go out of their way to kick up a fuss about it and only really if it's seriously loud (de-baffled stubby for example). I'd say most get caught because of other stuff, get pulled for bad riding and a silly number plate, they'll note the exhaust as well while they're at it.
For MOT's it's down to the MOT guy's opinion. Most will be fine.

I run with a modded baffle, I cut the baffle down. Mainly because de-baffled doesn't suit my bike and it didn't run as smooth. Also, I leave for work relativey early and don't want to annoy the neighbours. Though saying that, my bike doesn't make much more noise than the average dag-dag ***** van!

I had an interesting convo with a policeman a week or two ago in Brecon while riding with a group of mates, all of us got pulled over into a lay-by where there were officers waiting to check all details etc.

I've removed my baffle and so have a few others, we were told by the motorcycle officer that removing the baffle was an offence in it's self, as the exhaust it no longer as it should be.

Told that it's a £100 on the spot fine, i don't agree with it if i'm honest and think it's a load of BS.

I did mention that it was removable for a reason, and as such isn't outside of the manufactures specifications, so the only way in my mind to receive the fine would be noise related, thus they'd need to test it, but alas he repeated that even removing the baffle is an offence.

Strange thing was that at least 5 of us had no baffles, yet none of us got fined.

I've run my R6 with a full Akra system with no baffle for 2 years and never once been pulled for it. When you consider how short the exhaust on an R6 is (leaves under your right peg) I doubt you could make it much louder unless you stuck the Akra megaphone on there.

I had it sound checked at the track and it was 104db without the baffle and 102db with at 7k RPM (stationary). Then again the can does have a huge sticker on it saying not for road use :p

doubt you'll be pulled but if ever you do get pulled for anything else and you get a nosey copper that spots it then expect some points or a fine

cant be no louder than those stupid harleys

Yes, it is just a don't get caught thing :p. A lot of bikers ride around with illegal visors as well.

Doubt you'd ever get pulled unless it'd ridiculously noisy at low revs or you red line it passed them.

That moment when you pass a police car waiting to pull out of a side turning (maccy d's :p) and they turn to follow you instead of turning the way they were originally turning... :o

Time to change gear at 2k rpm :D

Was sat in front of them at 2 sets of lights, with no baffle in a somewhat noisy can (gets VERY noisy above 7krpm ;) ) and a dark tint visor, nothing happened. :)

Iv been running a 'Not for road use' Micron can the last few times iv been pulled over. Didn't even get the exhaust mentioned. As long as your tyres look good and you pass the attitude test, most don't tend to probe to much further.

Recently changed to a street legal can and i really don't like it, even with the baffles out. Just not got that deep tone.

If your worried just up shift a gear or two when u see the fuzz. Or explain that its loud for safety reasons, if people don't see you they sure as well will hear you :D

The safety aspect is quite appealing, and just for the sake of having an awesome sounding bike of course ;)

I'm a little surprised by this though. I can understand road riding without a baffle being an offence, but the mere act of removing a baffle?

So this officer must have noticed then, but he couldn't be bothered with the paperwork? Or was he just in a good mood?

The baffles removal is only really meant for when you arrive at a track day, mines stamped not for road use but I've filed it off

They can have you if they want, depends on the copper

Doesn't filing the writing off come with worse sanctions?

For non road use exhaust wouldn't you just be given a vehicle defect rectification notice, but if you deliberately tried to disguise the fact its non road use wouldn't that just annoy the copper more? Unless you have done a wicked polishing job ;)

haha, you cant see it now,i could just say it was like it when I bought it? but doubt that would make any diff

its not loud by modern pipes standards but loud enough

That was my motivation as well

I have to pull the clutch in when I see coppers..... ;):D

Haha I'm not suprised!

Mind you I've opened mine up down east street only to find a copper at the bottom of the road. They didn't seem to care luckily :D
