A Toyota exhaust - or any car exhaust - is assembled from more than one piece, and pattern replacements are made to join to the original parts. Maybe they rounded off the bolts trying to undo them and made up an excuse!

Not true.

The exhaust on the Clio 172s (not sure on the 182s) is one piece from the factory, as in it's not 2 or 3 sections bolted together. It's one long welded piece.

Then when the back box inevitably goes you have to buy the replacement in 2 sections. Reason being at the factory the exhaust is put on before some of the other bits that normally would block putting it all on as a one piece :)

there are a fair few cars that have one or two piece exhaust that you have to cut apart to fit repair pieces.

He went to Kwik fit so he's almost certain to have been ripped off. :( I'm quite surprised they didn't try to sell him new brake discs/pads and shocks at the same time. I am assuming the catalytic converter was not replaced since £400 for a complete system fitted including the cat would be more realistic. Then again, if they did fit a cat, why? They don't rot out like mild steel silencers, you only need to replace them if they stop working and you fail the MOT emissions test.

Even if the original exhaust was in one piece, after-market exhausts nearly always come in smaller sections that mean you simply have to cut the original system in the appropriate place to join it to the new section.

To give you an idea of the retail cost of an after-market exhaust for you fathers car, have a look at this. Around £100+vat for front and rear sections (not including cat).
