Expensive service?

I can't believe some of you guys are paying or have paid for stuff that hasn't been asked for. Should be telling the garages to remove the stuff and put your old ones on or if not possible then it is yours for free!

I'm clearly not forceful enough in this respect, but I will certainly be doing so in future :)

A good full service checking all ~50 items on the service list should take between 2.5h and 3h on a average car. Plus another hour for links and its not far off.

Although most garages have a fixed charge for servicing often lower then the hourly rate it would normally occur.

The time drop links take depends on the age of the car and the state of the thread, have had to melt them off before now, it would be false to say that they should only ever take x amount of time as it varies massively for a simple air ratchet on each not, to having to spend an hour faffing around trying to free off one seized nut.

i had the front drop links done on my 2004 1.8 astra done a couple of months ago, took the garage 30 mins.

4 hours labour seems steep for this job but it isn't uberly expensive,

I'd be happy with a bill of £200 as I told him not to do the plugs and it was only the front droplinks that needed changing and he didn't mention they where hard to get off, I would have done them myself but its hassle getting the car on axle stands in the drive etc, why not get it done when it being serviced?

£200 would be 3 hours labour and the cost of parts minus plugs which I think would be fair. I will see what he says bearing in mind I provided oil and filter ( I said I would do it myself but he said it was no problem) and he didn't have to change air/pollen filter which is a good 20 minutes work as you have to take the glovebox out.

I'll let you all know what he says

If you didn't request the work then you don't pay and ask them to remove the new parts. I really do have no idea why anyone would pay for works they haven't asked for...

Can you let me know your address, I will come and do some random work to your house and invoice you for £200 ;)
