Expensive upgrade?

As usual, I feel my PC is getting old so I decided to take a look at whats around right now. Although since my PC is about 18months old, I sort of feel this upgrade is rather expensive. Any opinions?

At the moment I have.

AMD Athlon64 3700+
ATi X1800 256mb ram
Corsair low latency DDR 1gb ram - 2x512mb stick
ASUS A8N-E motherboard.

The rest of my PC is fine.
Samsung SM 226BW Monitor (Purchased a few months ago as previous 14" CRT Monitor was 10yrs old, no lie!)
Corsair HX 520W ATX2.2 PSU (Purchased a few months ago)
Lian-Li PC V1100 PLUS Black Aluminium Midi-Tower
Creative Gigaworks T20 2.0 Speaker System
and a Plextor err slot loading disc drive (it matched the case very well).

The "rest of pc is fine" part I spent the most money on because I knew they would last me a lot longer than the hardware that has already aged further up in my post.

Yes its expensive, but doesnt help when you pick overkill £160 odd ram :p

Same performance but a lot cheaper, you could also buy a E2160 and overclock it too 3-3.2GHz which will still be extremely quick and save you another £100, although for the price of the Q6600, you can go wrong.

You could even fit in a 640MB GTS for less than your oringinal spec if you wanted.
 
I actually choose the RAM from a comment on this website! (Under the Mobo's page). So no more than 800mhz is what I should be looking at?

In regards to the mobo you suggested, is this one just as quiet as the one I choose? and does it generate less heat? I like the Wi-Fi on the Asus one I choose too but if the first 2 questions are yes then I will take a closer look at your suggestion.

Sorry I should have said I don't plan to overclock at all. I want a strong solid motherboard that supports my ram, cpu and is built so it is quiet and cooled.

Having a mobo that generates less heat will attract me more than overclocking possibilities. I choose ASUS as I belive they are the best in terms of reliability and build in regards to quiet and keeping the motherboard generally cooled well
 
May I ask why you have suggested the Asus P5K SE Intel P35 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard over the Asus P5K Intel P35 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard?
 
Alright after another look (and taking a closer look into the Motherboard/Memory discussion) I have decided with;

Asus P5K Intel P35 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard

I went with the P5K because it has a FireWire port, which would be nice to use with my External HDD.
Also went with Corsair because I have used them previously (currently in this PC).

Saves me near £150 from the original build. Thanks all.
