I'm thinking that doing a couple of IT related qualifications would be a good idea, network+, security+, ms courses etc, I was thinking of possibly doing one on-line to see how I get on.

What are peoples experiences of the home learning companies? Any to recommend?

Do they generally cost a bomb?

Depends on what you are looking for to be honest and what type of person you are. There's a number of exams which you can prepare for in your own time just by reading books and trying things out without the need for an online course.

The cheaper method would usually be buy the books yourself and self-study and then pay for the exam but I'm not sure if every qualification you wish could be obtained this way.

One of my friends spent £5,000 doing one of those online programming courses. Other than help from tutors ( could have found anywhere on any forum really ) there was nothing. he got a few hundred quids worth of books for £5k. Think he was paying back £7-8k over a 5 year loan period. He now earns 14k a year more than before he did the course but he was lucky I have other friends who did online courses and still didn't get in to ICT.

Thanks for the info, that's what I thought they would be like to be honest. I'm thinking of doing the Comptia Security+, I'll probably pick up the book and go from there

I actually ended up on a (free) course for it through work, but all that was used was the Mike Meyers book.

I'd say it depends on your background and current knowledge in that area.

I had experience in that area so it filled any gaps the book may have lacked with the book being useful to know what they deemed the right answers to things (in similar vain to having the 'microsoft way' of doing things for MS exams).

I was foolish enough to fool for a course with Advent computer training. If you're wondering why you cant find them - its because they went under!

MCSE course was £5,000 - which when taken with a loan from totalled nearer 6K.

Worst thing I ever done. As someone mentioned before you end up with £200's worth of text books and have to book all your own exams etc.

Best piece of advice I can give you is have a look at what the Open University have to offer

I went here to do some courses.

Course costs are low and even including the flight much less than the UK.

I found the quality of training very good and would recomend it to anyone who wanted to do a certification. May even go back there myself in the next year to do more :)
