Explain Blu-Ray and HD

Stellios said:
Yep, and they wont be doing HD-DVD at all.

Why do people keep saying that? :)

My point was that the majority of Blu-ray that I watch are from the awful selection at Blockbuster - movies that are not worth buying, but fun for a watch. This is good news for Blu-ray in general, but certainly not a sign of quality.

As for having to give £120 quid to MS for HDDVD, perhaps wait for standalone players to drop in price. It won't be too much longer till they're cheap as chips and you'll have a crap load of decent movies to choose from.

For all the debates on the technical front, i've seen few people list the Blu-rays actually worth buying. I struggle to find them while my HDDVD collection continues to grow.

I've got a Blu-Ray player (through my PS3) and tbh am struggling to find HD films to add to my Lovefilm list.

Having looked through the films available on both formats, the HD-DVD seems to have more titles that appeal to me.

there are plenty of films on either format to be honest. the newer releases seem to be better on BR, and hd-dvd is more geared towards older releases.

out of interest, what have you guys been buying on hd-dvd?

Same here really, I love my ps3 and the bluray quality is incredibly impressive, but until prices come down and more titles are released, I won't be buying much at all!

That pretty much nails it. BR has more modern blockbusters, HDDVD has the older 'classics'.

i will be buying it though hehe

Me too if I had a HD-DVD player, for a while I was contemplating getting one just for this 1 title! Apart from content from Universal Studios, the rest of the stuff on HD-DVD has a lot of old "classic" films that are say 10-20 yrs old. A lot of these are not ideal candidates for HD as they don't benefit as much as effects laden modern films, which really come into their own at high resolutions.

That is a valid point. I watch movies on a projector so from my point of view everyone of them is worth the upgrade. I also think that the real classics, movies you'll be watching time after time over the years, are always deserving - it's always more of an event watching movies in hd. At the end of the day, whether these movies are worth buying again depends on whether you think it's worth the cost to see them looking better than ever before. I've enjoyed something like Goodfellas in hd far more than any modern blockbuster.

Anything new - Hot Fuzz etc - or suitably cinematic - King Kong - is a no brainer. I'm actually kiddy over the thought of Scarface and Conana in hd :)

Goodfellas is on my list to rent on Blu-ray, but ultimately the race for next gen optical media will be based on nwer releases so I guess the onus is on Universal and Sony (the 2 notable exclusive distributors on each side) to up their releases. (I still can't understand why Spider-Man is not on Blu-ray for instance).

Isn't the Spiderman trilogy box set coming out soon? That's bound to sell by the truck load.

tbh i'm not really fussed about Spiderman after the first movie - it's things like Kung Fu Hustle and Donnie Brasco that sold me on the format.

some of the older films are definately worth purchasing in hd, but i have to go so ill have to give you a list of worthwhile purchases later:p

The first movie was the worst one IMO.

You cant have seen number 3 then :D

The first one was my favourite but i thought the villain was a bit silly, second one had a better 'villain' but i still didnt think as much of it

Yeah I have seen number three. I actually quite liked all 3 of them tbh, I just thought 1 wasn't as good as 2 or 3... just my opinion.

You are right, October the 30th it is due out. Surprised Sony are not bigging this up more. Regardless of what people think of the films, they have been the highest grossing films ever, on their respective opening weekends.

Disney could do with releasing Lost on Blu-ray to counter Heroes on HD-DVD.

I would like to see more TV shows on either HD format, Surely your 24s, Smallvilles, Heroes, Lost etc would sell by the bucketloads as these are very popular with the 20-30 crowd who probably happen to be the same people who care more about all this HD stuff.

I think the biggest selling Blu-ray and HD-DVDs to date have been POTC, 300 (65%-35% split), Casino Royale, The Matrix etc which all would appeal to "younger" crowds.

I like Spiderman 1 + 2, not seen 3, but to be quite honest, I wouldn't pay £40 for the 3 of them... I think i'll wait til they're a fair bit cheaper.

Currently thinking about picking up Black Hawk Down, Goodfellas and maybe Stealth. Anyone got these on Bluray and happy with them?

I have Goodfellas on Blu-ray and HDDVD (don't ask :)) and both are equally impressive. I'm not keen on the other two movies so can't comment. Kung Fu Hustle, Donnie Brasco, Crank, The Descent are some of my fave Blu-rays. Well worth checking out. Oh, Apocalypto looks lovelly and The Fountain is awesome (or utter poo - this film is a great divider)

rp2000, Lost season 3 is out on Blu-ray soon.
