Explain Blu-Ray and HD

Just for the record, to date there have been 267 HD-DVD vs 277 Blu-ray released (not much in it).

Also last week 300 became the fastest selling HD film selling 250,000 copies in 1 week. Some places report that that is comprised of 2:1 ratio in favour of the Blu-ray fomat.

From any thing I have read to date whenever a film is released on both formats the Blu-ray sells more copies.

its almost a joke

DVD has how many titles? 50,000?

No doubt 2/3rds of them are complete trash. The ones that are being ported over to a HD format are mainly good films/box sets. You cant expect them to focus on manufacturing HD formats as there arent enough users yet

Except for the odd releases the HD market is very small at the moment so neither format is likely to die in the foreseeable future.

Once we get players available in the supermarket for under a ton then we may see more households upgrading. However, it took DVD years to overtake VHS and I don't expect either HD format to do so for at least five years.

As for which to go for, best way to decide is to see which movies you want and go with the format that has the most. Or get both and just enjoy watching your favourite movies in HD. That's what I'll be doing once I get a PS3.

Lets get this right then, according to you, any new format is rubbish as the old one has more on it ?

its not rubbish..its technically amazing

bluray is by far the rip off of the two though

but in order to get all the films that i love i'd need to buy both players. so what do i do? by half on bluray and and half on hddvd?

i prefer dvds for £3

i'm betting things like this are the future of movies for the mass market

"Microsoft has also announced that its Microsoft TV service will add IPTV functionality to the console, giving users the ability to stream 2 simultaneous HD and 2 simultaneous SD channels.[47] Movies are available for rental. They expire in 14 days after download or at the end of the first 24 hours after the movie has begun playing, whichever comes first. Television episodes can be purchased to own, and are transferable to an unlimited number of consoles. Downloaded files use 5.1 surround audio and are encoded using VC-1 for video at 720p, with a bitrate of 6.8 Mbit/s.[48] Content is offered from MTV, VH1, Comedy Central, Turner Broadcasting, CBS for television; and Warner Bros., Paramount, and Disney for movies along with others.[49]

why is bluray the biggest 'ripoff' of the two?

standalone players are much more expensive

some high street shops sell blu ray discs for £25!! while equivalent hddvd on shelf below was £18.

high street shops charge £15 for the 300 on dvd. the same £15 that i paid for the bluray delivered to my door.

i dont really see your point? sure shops put premiums on the titles, but then they have always done that. yes the players are more expensive of course, but anything new is:)

thats not a fare comparison

high st vs high st

its perfectly valid. you are talking about the premiums shops place on bluray. that doesnt reflect the price of blurays as a whole does it? ie: its not prices the distributors put on the disk's that's your problem, its the shops.

high street shops are overpriced however you look at it. its unfair to say one shops pricing is indicative of pricing of bluray in general:)

yeah funnily enough neocon, i knew youd say that.

if you want a shop vs shop price, how about this then:

the 300 bluray : £15.99 delivered
the 300 hd-dvd: £17.99 delivered

last samurai bluray: £12.99
last samurai hd-dvd: £11.99

the prestige bluray: £14.99
the prestige hd-dvd: £17.99

the departed bluray: £18.99
the departed hd-dvd: £17.99

black rain bluray: £11.99
black rain hd-dvd: £11.99

thats from the same online store. prices are very close on all. that fits your criteria better doesnt it?

what about high st stores I cant mention. not some netseller in gurnsey

what about them? like i said, your problem is the premium those stores put on bluray, not the pricing they are available for.

Most Bu-rays I watch are the tat found at Blockbuster.

Yep, and they wont be doing HD-DVD at all.

Ibe not used HD-DVD so i cant slate it, but to be honest i cant justify having to pay Microsoft yet another £120 just to be able to play them.

I will have my ps3 in a few days and Im going to be using blu-ray. If the elite 360 had the hddvd drive built in and didnt still overheat/chew disks I would have preordered one and not bothered with ps3. Also my mates premium 360 sounds like a dyson (im not kidding). Thats why i chose blu ray anyway. They are a superiour format as they are ROM disks, and the bigger the memory then the more useful a ROM disk is. 30gb storage << 50gb storage. With resolutions at 1080p now I can honestly see the HD DVD being quite full with a 2.5hour film.
on a torrent site the other day I saw 300 xvid at 700mb and the 720p version at 4.5gb (just gives an idea of how many times bigger it is even if it is just a rip).

overal for me though I chose the games console that can play next gen films out of the box. blu ray for me :)
