OK, I've never had any dealings with this sort of thing but a friend of mine was asking about obtaining a certain name for his proposed brewing company; I've done a search on Domainit.com (any good?) and found that there are several versions available ..... nameofbrewery.com, nameofbrewery.co.uk etc.

The basic registration (1 year) looks to be quite cheep for all of them; I'm just wondering what is the best way of going about this? ie am I doing it right?

Do you get automatically offered the names after the year is up or should one ask for lifetime registration (any such thing?) etc

They offer various other things like Web hosting and search engine submission too but they are all extra.

Someone give me a clue what I/he should be doing so that the names are protected etc ........

Thanks for any assistance with this.

Find a good company to register the domain with. Someone like namecheap.com or 123-reg.co.uk NEVER use fasthosts or ukreg.

About a month before your domains expire (.com = 1 year min, .uk = 2 year min) you'll get an email informing you it's about to expire. You can set the account to auto-renew the domains or let them expire.

You'll need hosting for your domains but I wouldn't advise going with the same company as the people you register the domain from. Check the HTML forum stickey for some suggestions on that. I personally get hosting from eoshosting.com

You won't need 3TB of space and 555TB of bandwidth so don't fall for those offers. Look for recommendations from friends for the website host. If you ask nicely your website host should be able to help you at all the stages. Most are begging for customers and will help you where they can.

As has already been said, register your domain with a big company that isnt likely to go bust anytime soon.

In the past i've used a cheaper company, they went bust and it took a lot of time and effort to regain control of the domain.

For hosting i use tsohost.co.uk

I keep my domains and hosting separate, based on the old thing of not putting all one's eggs into one basket.

I used Register1 dot net for domains and have found them to be excellent.

I use uberhost.net for hosting and domainsite.com for everything other than UK domains. 123-Reg I believe is quite good.
