ok so i have a plasma lamp and next to it there is a normal lamp which held an incandescent light bulb. FORTUNATELY for reasons i don't quite understand the bulb broke :(

so i got out one of those energy saving ones that the electric company gave out last year

and woah......

The plasma effect uses a high voltage. The leakage of this high voltage is travelling through the bulb and back to earth through you. Only works with flourescent tubes as you've discovered. The picture under "field" may interest you:http://phileasblog.wordpress.com/
 
Something to do with the electrons in the phosphor in the energy bulb being excited by the charge emitted from the other lamp.

Cool lamp BTW I want one now.
 
It's because the energy-saving bulbs are fluorescent tubes, which work by electrons colliding with the gas inside and giving off light.

Your plasma lamp is giving off a shed-load of electromagnetic radiation, which interacts with the fluorescent tube and makes it light up. :)
 
it also makes the airwick freshmatic fire once a second

i think ill turn it off now i don't like radiation :(

Ive never heard such nonsence, he is quite clearly a wizard and needs burning. There is no place for witchcraft in this day and age!

If you get a chance to watch a movie called shooting fish they have a similar thing in it. Using a van der graff (sp?) generator they light fluorescent tubes up through touch. Great movie and cool effect!
