Explain to me the use of DACs

Hi,

What do people use DACs for exactly? Do people mainly use them to connect up their pc to their hifi without going through the sound card? I play a lot of my music via lossless audio on my pc and then play it through my hifi. I was thinking about a DIY DAC project for myself to keep me busy. I just want to make sure I have got the right idea about it all.

I had a emu 0404 connected up to my CA 540A and mordaunt short 902i's. When I turned the music up I used to be able to hear a bit of interferance. I bought myself a behringer DAC which cleared up the problem.

It's a digital to analogue converter so will basically bypass the sound cards DAC.
