I can't quite get my head around new CPU speeds and am struggling to understand that newer cpu's that are lower speeds than my current one are better.

I currently have a celeron D 2.8ghz in my desktop and i've been looking at building a HTPC. Which i have come to the conclusion will be a E2140/60/80 kinda set up.

I can't really get my head around the fact that a 1.6 E2140 will perform better than my 2.8 celeron D - is that correct?

I'm also now thinking that maybe the 2.8 celeron should be relegated to the HTPC and the set up i'm thinking about for the HTPC should become my new desktop

Go easy on me i'm a learner!! :)

:)

Yes,

For starters the E2140 has 2 cores and more cache.

Shorter pipelines meaning it can compute data quicker at a slower clock.

Think of it like a :

Celeron is a Spade

C2D a 2 x Shovel

And a huge pile of coal is the data.

To shift the same ammount of coal the spade would have to work quicker against the two shovels.

This means the two shovels can work at a slower speed but still shift the coal faster.

So which of todays CPUs would be equivalent to or the closest match to my current cpu, or are they all superior?

in gaming the E4300 beats a pentium D @ 3.6 according to Tom's hardware, and HD video encoding a E2160 is about the same speed as a pentium D pres @ 3.4

heres the comparison chart
http://www23.tomshardware.com/cpu_2007.html?modelx=33&model1=946&model2=882&chart=431

if your aware of how your current CPU stacks up vs some of the old pentiums you can draw comparisons.

practically any CPU will be a large improvement, even more so as the E2160's overclock to 3Ghz and beyond.

well i'm no expert but.....

it's about the architecture of the cpu, not just the clock speed.
it's like how AMD cpus were rated as equivalent to higher clocked intel cpus

so modern cpus have better and more efficient architecture than older cpus.

i don't know if that makes sense and i don't care cos i'm drunk!!!

a E2140 would be an unbelievably big step for you. Much much faster.

a stoneage athlon xp 2200+ would be twice as fast as the celeron, a p4 3.6ghz would be twice as fast as a 2200+ , a E2140 would be much faster than a p4 3.6ghz so yea..huge upgrade.

The P4 'Netburst' architecture is really inefficient and needs roughly 1.5 clock cycles to do what a PIII did in 1. So the early 1.7GHz P4s were no better than a 1.2GHz PIII. The only reason P4 was at all successful was that it could be made with very high clock speeds. The current processors owe more of their history to the PIII architecture and have regained that processing efficiency.

Must resurrect my dual 1133MHz PIII some time.....

Ye, better use the 2140/60/80 as your new desktop, much faster :D If you overclock these baby's you will have a very fast processor :)

But I dunno if that celeron of yours is a good idea for HTPC, maybe it can't handle HD content very well?

C2D a 2 x Shovel

This Celeron Desktop at work must be using a teaspoon to move coal then.
