Explaining PC gaming to a console friend

I moved to console mainly and wish came with keyboard and mouse.. Op bad games, they are very niche, games that I personally wouldn't play.. To much life required

Awful choice of games. So bad you should be spending a night in the local police cells.

I had a similar experience trying to explain PC gaming to my girlfriends dad. He is an avid 360 gamer - plays more COD and Fifa on Live more than anyone else I know.

He reckoned that as consoles were built specifically for gaming in mind, with controllers with an ergonomic design, optimum button locations etc that they will always be better than a PC. In his mind a PC is for office work. A keyboard and mouse set up is way too complex for him. To quote "There's too many effin buttons".

Also, the high price of top end computer components and the faff of having to install and configure each game for optimum performance really makes it seem a waste of time to him. If you can't just stick a disc in and go some people just aren't interested, and to be honest it's easy to understand that.

Each to their own I suppose.

It doesn't sound like you explained it particularly well to him.

You can use controllers on PCs no problem.

You don't need a high end computer or to pay high end prices.

With something like Steam, you don't really have to do any configuration to install a game. As for configuring a game once it's installed, takes seconds to do.

Just download it and run. You can "go" without sticking a disc in.

There's only one objective argument when it comes to consoles versus PC, and it's console exclusive games.

Played games both on console and PC and always come back to pc Better graphics
just get something like modern warfare 3 on console and put it on a pc monitor and see how bad it really is on a tv they can hide so much where on pc they have to make sure it looks nice.

Controls - gamepad is fine but all console games have a build in auto aim [ yes you can turn it off most don't ] get the big crosshair near u hit were on pc you have to point on top of the target.
Also keyboard is much better controls for fps maybe not for driving games but small price to pay.
locked in - No creative content on console / want to play skyrim fine that's all your playing no mods no hd textures but on pc ur find mods/updated and more adding years to the games we love =]

I think it can be a tough sell even with the right games, when chatting about games the other day I mentioned that I do most of my gaming on PC as it looks and runs better and a friend of my found that strange "who wants to faff around starting up their PC rather than just playing on a nice big TV?". I tried explaining that my PC can launch a game quicker than my PS3 (Win8 and fast SSD so much reduced loading time) but I guess many people just have old or otherwise slow computers so don't really know any better. I also said I could plug my PC into the TV if I wanted but again that was seen as a massive hassle - sure, the first time I did it maybe but if it was that big a deal/desire to me I'd just set it up in the living room (as it is I tend to do a lot of my gaming while my wife is watching TV so a monitor works better for me anyway).

I didn't even bother taking the discussion any further into all the other geeky advantages of PC we've discussed here 100 times (kb+mouse, modding, framerate, cheaper games etc) as ultimately I didn't really have an agenda to try and 'convert' him - what it did illustrate to me was that there is still a bit of a stigma/misconception/ignorance about PC gaming in that many dismiss it out of hand (understandably, perhaps).

As an aside back in 1998 after getting my first 3dfx card I remember using Forsaken to show off the PC capabilities, that really was a killer app :)

After playing FPS on PS3 for years, going straight to keyboard and mouse felt so natural for compared to a controller, now I can't use a controller.

The point of PC gaming is to play the games you normally play at 1080p/60fps. The choice of games you gave him was, to be blunt and silly, super retarded. +1 to the person that said you should spend a night in the cells for this outrage! :P

My girlfriend is an avid gamer (mostly console). However, she is mostly a lazy gamer recently, so she's happy to sit and watch me play games (win-win for both of us since I get to sit there gaming sometimes :P). I recently took my PC to her house for 3 weeks since her mum was away, so we were playing stuff together every night (Silverstone Raven 3 across central London = not fun at all). Near the end of the 3 weeks I turned to her and said "1080p, 60fps, do you understand why I spend so much time with my PC now?" and she agreed wholeheartedly. I even switched the game to 720p a couple of times to show her what a console version might look like and she agreed it looked horrible.

You really don't have to spend too much time or money with your PC any way. Spend £1,000 now (or much less if you want! If you already have the big TV with your consoles £500 will be fine) and you're going to have a system that is fine for years. A day setting it up, then just clean it out (you should be cleaning your consoles anyway!) every now and again.

PC gaming is also cheaper. £30 for NEW releases and they drop in price just as fast as console games. Even if you only bought 10 games a year, over 3 years that's £300 saved on software. If you wait till Steam sales, you can spend £50-100 and have enough games to last you all year.

Try doing this with a console gamer: set something like GTA IV or Call of Duty to play on both a console and hook them up to a HDTV. Flick between them. Plug a 360 pad (or even a Ps3 pad) into the PC. Then try to tell me why you're gonna stick with your console.

But ANYWAY... I game on consoles all the time. They're very convenient and easy to set up, and there's lots of games on them I can't play on PC. I have both a 360 and a Ps3 waiting for me when the mood takes me :)
And ANYWAY... as long as you're enjoying your fantastic gaming time, then GOOD :D

PC does what the console can with much better graphics. Throw COD, BF3, Crysis 2, Project Cars and blow his socks off. Use an XBox controller if you are playing racing games.

lol, who plays racing games with kb/mouse, crazy. And you picked possibly the hardest fps for someone to play with a kb/mouse when they have never done so before.

Skyrim modded through steam with xbox pad would have had him crying with joy at the beauty and the smooth gameplay. It lends itself so well to a pad too.
