Explanation for glass just 'popping'!

at *** guy who said that it could be a bb gun, i dont think any bb gun could completly smash a window at a small range

The back window on my Ibiza exploded at random one day. I'd just pulled into a parking space at the side of the road and I as slowed down, BANG!

I know of a few other Ibiza's that have had the same happen but I don't see how you can complain about it.

What the hell? I've never heard of car glass exploding for no reason.

I think you guys just have bounties on your heads.

My dad had this happen on his capri about 6 years ago, just driving along an NSL at 60 ish and BANG!!! really loud, rear window just shattered into little cubes of glass.

Also had a glass explode in kitchen once about a half hour after it had been washed, was just sat there on sideboard & just decided it wanted to be everywhere in the kitchen all at the same time, now that was wiered.

Its very cold at the moment, differences in temperature? Was the sun shining strongly but it was still very cold or something.

That or a ghost, an oracle should know.

Washing up a glass and leaving it can cause pressure, I seen them move by themselves that way especially if it was very hot water evaporating

You would think that sunshine warming the glass would be a relatively slow process, and since I'm guessing it had been out in the sun all day I don't see why it would be sudden, like when you pour boiling water on glass. Weird.

Poltergeist tbh ;)

to clarify, its been cloudy here all day, and the temp has remained pretty constant, not hot / cold...anyway, its popped, nothing I can really do about it now apart from secure the car and replace it at the earliest convenience!

I am however glad that its not just me it happens to!

Could the air pressure in the car have built up or expended to temperature change and broke the glass?

I dont buy these temperature explanations, I seriously think some kid with an airgun did it, or something like that. :(

Look in the car for a pellet...

ALternatively car glass can sometimes be supidly hard to break. I remeber as a kid we found an old cortina door on a bit of scrap land with an intact window. So of course we tried to smash it. We wound the window up fully and threw a big rock at it... nothing. Bigger rock... nothing.... Brick... nothing... BIG brick.... nothing. At this point someone went and found a big metal bar. The largest of us pulled his jumper over his head to cover his eyes and whacked it HARD.... nothing ( again)

Eventually we gave up. Came back next day and it was smashed. :(

The corsa one was defintately IMHO temperature related. Balzing hot day in August 2001, window had been up and aircon had been on, but it was the passenger window that popped when i got out of the drivers side and shut the door. It didnt pop for a minute or two after the door was shut and (apart from the door shuting) there was no real other explanation.

Remember, only the driver door was opened and shut, the passenger window popped!
