this is imense, i was totally unaware that an explosion could make a sonic boom, has, anyone ever been in the concorde and experianced a sonic boomm, or anyone ever been in a fast jet??

100tonnes of what? TNT?
He probably meant it's a 100 ton explosion. Explosions are measured in tons of TNT. So it was either TNT or something else that makes an explosion equivalent to 100 tons of TNT.

I might be wrong, but from what I gather from my family having been on Concorde, you don't hear the sonic boom on board.

I have heard the sonic boom from the ground when it used to fly over every now and again. You would hear the loud booming and when you looked up at where the sound had come from, you could only see the jettrail and the concorde a long way ahead.

its just after u see the fire!
All i see is the massive release of heat making all of the water in the air condense so that you can actually see it before it gets evaporated off. Thats as far as i understand it. I cant see how it is a sonic boom.

thats what i thought the sonic boom was

Its just a shockwave isn't it? So yes, its a soundwave, whether it is actually traveling supersonic I don't know, but its still the same principle. And I suspect thats an ammunition dump being blown up. Either that, or theres a lot of shrapnel flying around after.

You can't experience a sonic boom from within the aircraft you're flying!

Sound travels at the speed of sound, so it's neither supersonic or subsonic. :p

a sonic boom is just a pressure wave, one travelling at the speed of sound. anythign can generate one with enough force - an explosion, a concorde, or the first man made object to break the sound barrier.......the bullwhip;)

you could say its just blue and spiky.

sometimes it turns yellow and gets even spikier.

;)

Its a shockwave, which by definition travels at the speed of sound. This is because the speed of sound is the speed at which a given medium can transmit the vibrations that make up the sound itself.

He's right.

I've flown on Concorde, and as soon as you break the sound barrier you are travelling faster than sound (obviously). Thus you never hear the sonic boom.
