Extending network to garden

Hi All,

I recently built a garden office that is some 35m from the main building. I have upgraded my router to a Class N and also bought a huge aerial for the PC in the office. The signal strength ranges from 60-100% and it's fairly good but I do suffer from a lot of drop outs. Running a hard cable is not really an option as I don't want to drill and route the cable into the house. I have been looking at ethernet Ac adapters which would give me a good link. I Wanted to know if it's possible to buyanother device in conjunction with the AC adapter which sends a wireless signal out from it so that I can connect multiple devices ?

Any help appreciated, even if there is a better way !!!!

Thanks,
Carl

You can buy homeplugs with wifi capability but it's much easier just to have an access point connected to the standard homeplug, probably cheaper too. Just something with a couple of LAN ports and a wireless g/n ap would be fine I'd think.

Upgrading the antennas on the router would help also if you can.

Does the router have removable antennas?? If so get some 8db replacement antenna(s) for the small one(s) on the router. Will make the routers transmit and receive signals much more efficient.

Thanks gents, unfortunately the router (NG N150 DGN1000) is a cheapo supplied by my isp for which the antenna is fixed. Funnily enough, I bought a 8db antenna with this in mind, then found out that I couldn't use it on the router but did end up using on the other end (the USB wi-fi adapter for the PC in the office) so got some use out if it as it did indeed improve things.

Just so I get this right, with an access point the chain would be -

Router > Ethernet > Homeplug > AC Cable Office > Homeplug > Ethernet > Wifi AP

Is that right ?

Thanks again,
Carl

you could always buy a wifi signal booster/extender. it a simple device that you place at the farest point in the house where you get 90-100% strengh, from their the device re-broadcast the signal at 100% extending the range. you can also chain together a few of these device to extender you wifi network around the house and garden so that where you normally get dead spot/poor signal strengh you won't get them there. a lot of company use them when they can't laid cable down or in work yards.

Thanks Pecnarf, I thought the same thing and ordered one which should arrive tomorrow. If using it as an extender works all the way to my office then whey hey !!!

If not, I will invest in a twin homeplug and then use it as a wireless access point.

Carl,

if you have a home plug into the office (garden shed) why not just use cables in there also? if its a switch single cable

kerrgreg - Because there are about 3 devices which would benefit from a good source, and then there is my phone which is wi-fi only. p.s. it's a bit more than a shed, it's a 25m2 concrete base solid wood / insulated construction :)

Spenty - Read the OP, also I've done enough digging in the last year for a lifetime....
