Extending wireless signal.

Hi.

I have the virgin 50mb service with the Dlink dir615 router, I also have a zyxel 200mb homeplug system running throughout my house and summerhouse. I have a zyxel homeplug wireless router connected in the summerhouse, but my problem is the speed from the zyxel wireless router is about 5-10mb/s when it should be far higher. I also cannot seem to access the zyxel routers online setup any longer!.

Any ideas on extending the range of the wireless, and recommendations of better wireless cable routers than the Dlink?

Cheers

Is that the wireless speed? 10mb? What's the LAN speed?

As for suggestions i'd say a DDWRT compatible router such as a linksys.

That is the speed from the zyxel regardless of whether via LAN or WI-FI.

Ideally I'd like a router that has enough range to cover the entire area. The D-link is discoverable, but very weak at the furthest point.

You can put DDWRT on the 615, as I've done it. You have to flash it with two different versions to get it on there. I much preferred Tomato on my old Linksys though.

I'm guessing the issue may not be the wireless itself but the lack of speed over the homeplugs that feeds it? Try moving it to a socket nearer to the router to test.

Thanks. I flashed out the virgin firmware for the latest D-link one. The DD-WRT site doesn't list the Rev.D4E version of the Dir-615 so I'm unsure of which one to use.

I can't remember which ones it was, but found it on this forum so should be able to find it somewhere.

I flashed with DD-WRT and the router is working much better now. Wireless is now reaching the 50mb DL speeds on my netbook and all is well. Thanks for the advice.

Multiple AP's on different channels connected to the same physical LAN using the same DHCP server. Place the AP's throughout the house and you will at least have multiple AP's to connect to. I'm not sure without using software such as Cisco's wifi manager etc how you manage jumping from one AP to another based on signal strength however.
