I don't want to derail but most people would prefer a gui control panel or to vnc into a desktop than to use a terminal. There's nothing wrong with your plan, it's what I use, but I think the OP is after simplicity and ease of use (he owns a mac). A dedicated commercial box would probably suit him better.
