External Caddy Problems

I've got a iOmega Prestige 3TB external HDD, which is (probably) out of warranty, so I've dismantled it, so I can use the USB3 caddy part to use with other HDD's.

I've put the original HDD to one side and used a spare blank drive for testing.
When I connect the spare to the iOmega and format it, it works OK and shows in Windows 8, I can transfer data to it etc.
But, if I remove the drive and connect it to my USB2 caddies (I've tested with 3 old ones) or directly to my PC, I'm asked to format the drive, so I can use it.

If I do format it, it works in all the USB2 caddies and computer, but if I then plug it back into the iOmega, I'm asked to format it again.
It's like there's 2 types of formatting and neither is compatible with the other.

Just to add and to maybe complicate things further.
The original drive still works with the iOmega, but I've also used True Crypt on that drive and it works OK when connected it to, but if I connect the original drive to Windows, True Crypt doesn't recognise the encrypted volume on the drive.

So I think the caddy has some type of security built into it.
I could transfer the data off the original drive, format it and transfer the data back.
But, I'd loose the use of a USB3 caddy.

Has anyone come across this type of thing before ?
Thank you.
