External connection for SATA

Hi

I have a Asus P5K motherboard which has an eSATA connection on the back panel.

I also have a 400Gb Barracuda SATA drive which I want to connect via this external connection. I don't need it connected all the time, only when I need it for backup purposes etc.

I plan to use a SATA to eSATA cable to connect the drive to the back panel, and use an extension to one of the SATA power cables from the PSU. Would this work ok without any roblems, or will I have to buy an external Caddy ?

Cheers

It'll work but it's a messy solution - you need to make sure nothing is shorting on the board side of the drive etc. On the other hand it's cheaper than using an enclosure.

I realise that its a bit of a messy situation, but I only want to plug it in when I need it, then unplug it.

I was just concerned that there is some circuitry etc in the caddy's that is required for the external connection to work without any problems.

There is no such circuitry ?

Cheers

What about using something like this?

I have seen them for only about £2

Thanks for your reply.

If there wasn't already an external eSATA connection on the backplate, I would use something like that. I may as well use this connection, and I can use an extension to a spare connection on one of the PSU rails to power it.

I am mostly interested in finding out tif there is any required circuitry that may be a the caddy to prevent probems occurring.

Cheers

the eSATA port is just an external SATA port, on some boards, the eSATA is just a bracket that plugs into the normal SATA ports, just connect it up with an eSATA - SATA cable as you said.

I was surfing the web earlier as you do, and came across this:

"Sharkoon HDD Quick Stand" Not bad for £3.50 and I think would do you a treat.
