Am I right in thinking that if I were to bag one of these external enclosures:

Clicky

then I could just stick one of my existing IDE drives in to make it an external one?

I'm looking at this one: Icy Box External Enclosure IB-351UE-B-BL Firewire + USB Combo - Black/LED

Can it just run via USB or do you have to use Firewire too? Are they powered via the USB too or do they require an AC adaptor?

Yup, should just be a case of sticking an existing drive in and you'll be away.

You can use either the USB or Firewire connection, Firewire will be a bit quicker probably. It'll have an external power supply, USB can't supply enough juice to power a 3.5" HDD.

Hmmm... problem is, the firewire port on my base unit has never worked for some reason, but the USBs are fine. I've got a 40GB Western Digi portable drive which runs fine from USB and I use it to swap files around between machines and to friends.

This new drive would be used to backup my music and films though, just in case the worse happens. You think I'll need its own power supply then?

EDIT: some really nice pics in your gallery there rpstewart, I'm gonna have to get myself up North of the border when my new MTB bike is sorted!

Yep go for the enclosure, USB should be fine, if you want to use firewire just get a firewire card cheapo somewhere. And I tihnk they come with a power supply but I cant say to be sure. If not there avalible from just about every electronics shop in the UK.

I've got an Icy Box and it def has a power suppy, (in-line job) I too was kinda hoping it didn't, I take it its only the laptop drives that don't need one.

Just got the same Icy Box External Enclosure IB-351UE-B-BL Firewire + USB Combo - Black/LED but have yet to swap my drives around and put my 80Gb Seagate into it. It comes with an external power supply as USB cant power it obviously.
Note when you are using Firewire u should flash the firmware to the latest version as there is reported data corruption if u dont.
Google 'icy box *****' to find the thread on the ***** forum.
The following webpage has the ROMwriter and firmware u need:-
