Looking at getting another external drive but not sure what to get, is it better to get and external drive from maxtor/WD or buy an ide hdd and get a external bay?

It is probably cheaper to get the HDD and enclosure separately. In the very least you have more control over what size/speed HDD you get.

Good combo is an IcyBox enclosure and an Hitachi Deskstar if you want performance or a Samsung Spinpoint if you want quiet.

don't overlook "ready-made" external drives. if you look around, you'll find very good bargains. my buffalo 250gb fits a good wd disk, is quiet (no fans), looks awesome and came packed with backup software....not to mention the warranty. when i bought it, it was cheaper than a drive+icy box.
