I've always been told that if I wanted an external hard drive, the best thing to do would be to buy a normal hard drive and stick it in an enclosure, then you could plug it into whatever PC you ge later on.
However, I'm now looking for extra portable storage that I can easily swap between my laptop and PC, so I can watch various anime I've downloaded on my PC drives, just on my laptop when I'm away, as the 40Gb hard drive isn't really enough now.

This offer certainly has my interest, since it seems to be cheaper than all the SATA 400Gb hard drives you do, plus there would be an extra cost for buying an enclosure.

But I don't know much about USB external hard drives. Are they any less reliable than normal ones you put in your PC? Also, when they say 400Gb, its going to be about 370 isn't it because of the rounding thing they always do. Finally, what are the speeds like compared to an internal drive? I know you shouldn't run newer games from them since you're limited by the speed of the usb ports, but other than that, they are just as good as the internal ones, right?
Finally, when does the offer end on the drive? :)

Well, I know that Laptop drives spin slower than desktop drives, plus also I'm not sure if I would be able to use a drive from overclockers in my Dell laptop, as I've heard that there are several components in Dell systems that are made so you can only use Dell parts.

I think I've talked myself into getting the usb drive, as it will make an easier go-between than using DVDs or sharing over a network, and will give me secondard storage for my laptop.
Though if someone could answer my last paragraph I'd appreciate it :)

Don't buy a Maxtor one. Maxtor drives are known to be the worst out there. Go for Western Digital if you want a ready made enclosure.

As for your laptop, any 2.5 Drive should fit in your Dell. Make sure it is either IDE or SATA first.

Thanks or your help. In the end, unfortunately I didn't go with overclockers because I'd forgotten about shipping. In the end, for £2 more, I got a 500Gb WD drive, including delivery, from a different retailer.
Thanks for the advice :)

There is some new WD My Books due BTW, I just bought the My Book 500GB ES PRO and used it with USB2 to test then ESATA, hits 67MB/Sec AVG Sustained. :)
