Considering both my room, where the the router is, and the study, are both by windows, and my parents will not allow an ethernet cable be run through the house:

would it be possible to run an ethernet cable from the router in my room, out of the window and into the study and connect straight into their computer?

the distance is no more than 20m

Would i need proper outdoor ethernet cables?
what should i look for when buying them?
does it need any special shielding?
cat5? 5e? 6?

thanks guys :)

Direct computer to computer? You may need to add a network switch. More details required to answer properly.

the distance is no more than 25m No problem with the distance.

Would i need proper outdoor ethernet cables? Better if you do but not essential. It depends on how long you need it to last.
what should i look for when buying them? It'll be sold as exterior grade cable.
does it need any special shielding? No just use UTP.
cat5? 5e? 6? Cat5e or Cat6.

thanks guys :)

Well it is possible to connect your computer directly to the one in the study but it depends on how many network ports the computer in the study has and how it connects to the router at the moment?

It would also mean that the study computer would need to be on permanently (or whenever you wanted to use the connection)

im not sure i understand, all i am trying to do is to make a computer currently using wifi to run on ethernet

i just want to know what cable to buy so that the ethernet cable goes externally

the computer in the study is just one machine, i dont think a switch is necessary as nothing else is going to be plugged in there - the router is in my room

At first glance your original post read as if you were possibly trying to do something more complicated than you actually are. It’s now clear that it’s just a simple connection between a single PC and a router via an external cable.

You can find the cable by Googling ‘External Cat5e’. Any direct links are probably going to fall foul of the forum rules.

I’m amazed that a set of parents that won’t allow an internal network cable will allow holes to be drilled through external walls and have cables clipped outside. Have you considered Powerline adapters?

Edit: Is this a permanent cable? If not just buy any network cable of a suitable length and chuck it out of the window.

im sorry if my original post is confusing - it was not meant to be :(

parents wont allow internal cables, it would have to literally go around the whole house to be hidden - going outside is the easy option :p

powerline adapters wont work either as the study is on a different power circuit for some obscure reason (done before i was born)

semi-permanent, no more than 5 years

my plan at the moment is just to use a normal 30m ethernet cable i have in the cupboard because i will be painting the house in the next month and the paint should protect it enough for temporary use

It really depends on how exposed to the elements the cable will be. The main problem is the outer casing disintegrating due to UV exposure, but that’s not going to happen overnight.

thanks for your help, ill test just an internal cable with house paint over it and if it starts to disintegrate - ill put proper external cabling :)

I know a few people on here have just used normal cable outside for quite a while and not had any problems. If I were doing it I'd probably chance it with an internal cable and just keep an eye on it for cracking

well last night i routed the cable under my carpet and out of the window

this morning ive just connected the machine via LAN and the speed difference is enormous :p

from 0.5Mbps to 11.5Mbps :D

At the moment the ethernet cable is just thrown out of the window but what ill do on the weekend is actually drill holes and do it semi-permanently

if the cable does start to break down quickly, then ill invest in an external cable

thanks for your help guys :D

I ran Cat5e from my cable modem in my dining room, coiled around the gutter downpipe and up into the loft where my kit was and was like it for about 5 years, including a period of about 2 years where the water ran mostly down the outside of the pipe (all over the cat5e) due to a loose fitting at the top.

When I moved I took it down and it showed no obvious signs of failure.

was this an internal or external cable? :)

FWIW, Cat5e/6 cable will be fine outside. Maybe inspect it every 6 months or so for any signs of damage, but the first thing you'd notice is a decrease in speed and perhaps some packet loss.

I ran a 100M ethernet cable for a mate living in a caravan over a year ago, he didn't even bother to bury/protect it, it's just outside in the elements, still working fine :D Cat5e
