External Ethernet cable?

FWIW, Cat5e/6 cable will be fine outside. Maybe inspect it every 6 months or so for any signs of damage, but the first thing you'd notice is a decrease in speed and perhaps some packet loss.

thats what ill look out for then - a drop in speed, thanks

I ran a 100M ethernet cable for a mate living in a caravan over a year ago, he didn't even bother to bury/protect it, it's just outside in the elements, still working fine :D Cat5e

awesome - i have faith in this working for a reasonable amount of time then :D

I ran internal cat 5e at my parents outside and up the wall into my room. Lasted the 4 years I was there altho the yellow cable did fade quite badly it stood up to all the elements, wind snow rain sun etc and is still going strong now as my mum is using it for her laptop 6 years after it was first installed :D

Homeplugs work on different circuits..

Unless you have 2 incoming power feeds and 2 consumer units, they will work.

Are both computers running gigabit ethernet? The router being capable of gigabit is useless if neither of the computers are - a Point-to-Point connection is only as fast as it's slowest link.

As morfmedia says, it looks about right for 100Mbps/12.5MBps (8 bits in a Byte). The other option to look at, if the external cabling becomes a problem for any reason, is just to use a WiFi extender. Place it about halfway between the router and PC, and it should repeat the signal. It won't be perfect, but if you're currently fast enough to get some sort of signal, it should get you to within normal range.
