NortH ShieldS !!!!
Afternoon, Ive been looking around for some time now, for a external hard drive just to back my current system up ! But there are that many i don’t really know what to go for  or what i should look for ??

Am looking for at least 160GB drive !
USB connection !
It need's to be really reliable as my system will be backed up on it !!!!!!!!!
Price range would be up to £70 ish
It doesn’t have to look nice lol

So has anyone got any ideas, which one would be a good idea to look at ??

Cheers :)

Best option is to buy the HDD and enclosure separately. This way you can fine tune the make size and model of HDD you prefer and also which enclosure you prefer.

My personal choice would be:

Icy Box External Enclosure IB-351U-BL USB2.0 - Silver (CA-005-BT)

As for HDD I would probably go for an Hitachi Deskstar or Seagate Barracuda.

The whole lot should come to under £70 and you can feel safe in the knowledge that you have the HDD you want, and can put in a different HDD at a later date.

Recommend Freecom range, e.g...
  • Freecom Classic SL 160GB USB 2.0 External Hard Drive (HD-005-FC) £73.73 incl. VAT
m8's got a 80GB old one that's serving him well (over 2 years). Infact just ordered a SL Mobile 2.5" 40GB USB 2.0 for my Dad to move from a bulky, external-powered, enclosure type :D

Agree 100%

Pre-built external HD's come with crippled warrantys and building your own is cheaper.

yeh but they work out of the box, and you dont have to worry about getting it right, plus for 70 quid you can had a nice 250GB lacie porsche designed drive..

It's not a big deal pluging a drive into a connector and then screwing the lid back on. I've got a Lacie Porsche designed external DVD writer and tbh it's ok (looks nothing like a porsche! and quite honestly if that's meant to be special design then I'm missing the point) but given a choice of looks or performance I'd get the performance. A box and drive means you can choose the actual drive itself. So you may want to choose the fastest thing out there, or you may want to choose the best warranty, or maybe the quietest drive, etc.
