Woundering if anyone could help, just plugged my external hard drive into the wall, and it popped. Smoke came out, like an idiot id used the wrong cable.:(

Now this as hell of a lot of my work on, can i take the drive apart plug it in my pc and just recover the data of it through windows..
Im really screwed, could anyone help?

I assume you used the wrong DC adapter.

The drive may be ok.

Strip the drive from the caddy and inspect the drive PCB for charing, componets that are damaged or a burnt smell. If it appears ok and the damage seems to be on the Caddy PCB then borrow or but a basic usb caddy to install the drive into.

I wouldn't use you PC in case the drive is damaged and it then damages your mainboard.

Nope just plug it in and go, as the previous poster indicated I think your data should be OK <fingers crossed>

Next time why not get a USB powered external disc ;)

ok just been to get a external caddy, no luck nothing comes up in my computer..

tried it in anotehr tower again nothing..:( help

Seems power releated as the disc isnt spinning up tried another HD in the caddy and it spins, but the external one will not spin in the caddy.
