External Hard Drive - Gaming

How much of a slowdown, if any, will I experience playing games such as Morrowind from an external hard drive? Or even newer games such as Stalker for that matter.

Ive got a pretty poor system, 2.66ghz p4, 512mb ram, agp 7600gs (upgrading soon ).

The best option is probably to go and get a copy of HDTach and see how fast your current HDD is. An external USB2 drive will give you a sustained transfer rate of about 25-35Mb/s and a seek time of 12-14ms or so (depending on the drive)
