Ran out of sata slots, so got a 3tb external USB 3.0 drive, a Hitachi Touro.

Speed is great, price was great, but the heat is very worrying. HD Sentinal reports 56C after a day (from 20C), no matter if it's idle or thrashing.

Will this be OK? Not much I can do about it, but concerned that at this temp the drive won't last long.

Open it up and put the HD inside your PC where it has some ventilation (seriously, not just cos I have a question!). And then tell me what model number the drive inside it is.. 5400 or 7200rpm? Unless you have some s/w that can tell you without opening it?

HDDs will survive 50c+ but its not good for them, plus Smart HDDs record the max temp. Personally I wouldnt buy a 2nd hand HDD which had been allowed to get warm.. would never know how much of its life had been toasty!
