External Hard Drive - No Power?

Hey,

I have an external Iomega hard drive which is used as (thankfully not my only) backup.

The drive was working fine last time I used it a few days ago, however I went to plug it in today and cannot get it to power on. I have tried this on 2 separate computers and tried different cables.

I would like to recover as much of the information as possible - but unsure about the best way of going around this. Would opening the drive and connecting to a SATA connection and trying to access the drive through Windows that way be a feasible way of doing this? Obviously assuming the drive it self is not at fault?

I am also looking for a better way of backing up 3 PC's for home use. Most are connected to the network via wireless and in total hold probably 500GB which makes online storage not ideal.

Any suggestions or advise would be greatly appreciated.

I would remove the drive and hook it up to your desktop PC and see if it's recognised. Providing it is then you may be able to just copy the files you need. If that doesn't work then try Recuva or TestDisk.

Regarding your backup query, have a look at the free version of Macrium reflect which is very good. Acronis is also very good but not free.

Remove the drive from the enclosure, I've seen so many enclosures fail, it's not even funny.
