External hard drive?

I am thinking on buying a gaming edition pvr I know I have to connect it to a pc before recording but I have a minuscule hard drive. I plan on buying an external hard drive. Would I be able to record onto the external hard drive instead or does it have to be internal. I plan to take the hard drive downstairs so I can edit it on a faster pc.
