Hey all

Is there an external hard drive out there that is able to be connected to a PC all the time via say USB and can turn off when the PC does and/or go into standby mode?

I know you are going to say, external hdd... duh.

However I've had a few and I am not sure if it has been 'self made' caddies (i.e; hdd and caddy bought seperately) but they have a really unhealthy spin down or have some read issues when spun back up etc - so I constantly do the "hdd unplug in windows" and then turn it off from the back - which is annoying as I'd like to be able to turn the PC off and the hdd will go off with it.

I've also had a hard drive go corrupt/not able to boot until I connect it into my main PC sata as its been 'corrupted' by being left on/switching off etc??

I am wondering if a portable hard drive is the answer as the power is from the USB itself?

Sounds like a stupid question, however I dont really want to waste money in getting a caddy which doesn't 'work' properly.

i use one of these,

h88p://www.thermaltakeusa.com/Product.aspx?C=1346&ID=2047, but have also had a StarTech.com SuperSpeed USB 3.0 to Dual 2.5/3.5in SATA Hard Drive Docking Station Storage controller- Serial ATA-300- 3 GBps version as well.

main reason for me is i have a large collection, 17tb on old work 1tb drives, next year will be getting 20x 2tb versions as ex work upgrades.

plus good if i want to recover data etc and cant be bothered to open case, have a ide version as well, but thats way old

as it is powered, it can be disabled or switched off which parks the heads anyway, been using it for a couple of year in one form or another with no drive errors so far, touch wood, not sure if it meets your needs but give it a look and see.

hope it helps
