I no external hard drives arnt meant to be for gaming but I need a new one for gaming. My PC at the moment I just want to ware down to ground and end of next year buy a new PC. Inside my PC has been rearranged that much that I cant place another ssd or hard drive in to fit the 970 gtx graphic card in. The case was too small and had to be arrange different and take certain parts out put back in different way to fir the card. Now I cant get to sata cables on my mobo unless I take it out again which I don't want to. I was thinking what is the best external hard drive to get to play games from. I was just going to get GTA V and its 65 GB a loan with out patches and ive only got a 110 GB ssd. So is a external hard drive reasonable to play games on but have my Operating system on the SSD?. I do have games on my SSD now but just running out of space. Thanks.

Most games will be fine on an external including GTAV, i have it on a 5200rpm one atm and haven't had any issues. I believe it's games with loads of texture loading that being on a slow HDD could affect but it's been years since i've experienced that.

I do have a external HDD its usb 3.0. I don't no what speed it is but it is western digital elements. How can I tell what speed it is?. Also would I have to format the drive 1st as there are things on it but I don't want them but would like to keep but not bothered too much.

Or what about something like this to install games onto and play?. http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-421-WD

I have 2 Western Digital Passport USB 3.0 external drives for storage and they are fine, though I personally wouldn't run any software from them. Perhaps e-Sata is an option if your system supports it? It is possible to mount normal hard drives in an enclosure, but after a bad experience with a dodgy USB 2.0 one (I think it killed my SSD) I wouldn't recommend it. The WD Elements drive you listed doesn't say the speeds but I'd think any USB 3 better than 50MB/s would do the job.
