external hardrive speeds?

just ran hd tune on my maxtor 7200rpm 300gb ide, I only seem to get about 18mbytes during testing.

my notebooks 5400rpm drive does double that.

is this right

Sounds about right. It's the USB interface (I assume that's what you're using) that's the gating factor.

Not sure why given that USB2 will do 480Mbps (60MB/s) you tend to get poor performance from external disks - I get 14-15MB/s from mine.
