I need an external HD to do some stress testing - for which the limiting factor is 100Mbps Ethernet, therefore need to know that it can perform better than this... Can anyone offer an experience with the following drives as to reliability and benchmarks?

1) WD MyBook Essential
2) Seagate Expansion
3) Buffalo JustStore
4) WD Elements

Cheers!

Have you looked into buying an external enclosure and putting a hard drive in that you know performs well? I've got an Icy Box with a Samsung F3 in it and that performs very well. Is eSATA a possible connection for you? Much faster than USB.

Speed isn't the key priority, it just needs to be an off the shelf drive that is up to the task. Definitely has to be USB too. I always buy enclosures and HDs separately for myself, but this isn't for me.
