I have an external harddrive that is now not being read by the PC. It comes up with the drive letter in My Computer but displays no size/freespace info and if i try to access the disk it says its corrupt/unreadable.

Is there anyway of fixing this. I have used different USB cables and hooked it to a different machine and its the same problem accross the board.

I have some files on it that i cant replace so any help would be great.

Thanks
Zero.

ok a quick update, ive used a file retreval program and i can see that all my files are still on the HD but i dont have room on my normal drive to save them. I think that somethign must have corrupted the "this is a hard drive and whats on it" bit of the HD is there a way to fix that so i dont have to save things bit by bit.

google 'testdisk' that should work..

testdisk should just recover the partition as is

this is why you should backup.

if it's an external usb drive first thing would be to remove the drive from the caddy and connect it direct to your PC

this eliminates possible problems with the USB controller in the caddy, power problems with the caddy and also lets you perform file / recovery operations on the drive much much faster.

you never know it might just be the physical caddy / controller not the drive...
