Friend of mine dropped his new 1TB external HD recently, it was fine for a few days. He started to hear it "clicking" when in use and now it will not come up in Explorer. Device manager recognises it but not Explorer. Assuming it is on his way out but will any data recovery programs work if Explorer cannot see it - is there a way round this?

Checked disk management (computer management) under administrative tools in the control panel?
