External HD - How to install?

Hi,

Like an idiot i bought a Seagate baracuda from OC, but picked up an "Asonic" external enclosure from a shop in town - now im completely unable to get it recognised.

The enclosure doesn't come with an installation programme, and XP does not recognise the device.

All this aside, does it need to be in master jumper configuaration? Can't find in my the computer management section.

Please help!!!!!

Right, i've changed the jumper settings to master. This iniated the Seagates disk wizard when windows started, but when it came to format and partion the drive nothing happen.

The progress indicator simply jumps to 100% and it says everything is complete.

There is no addditonal harddsik present in computer management, and the USB mass storage device does not have any information

Take a look in Device Manager - right click on My Computer, pick Properties and then Device Manager from the Hardware tab.

Is there an extra disk showing in the Disk Drives part of the tree?

EDIT: What size is the drive? It may be that the enclosure doesn't support drives over 132Gb.

It shows "generic storage device USB device" in the disk drives section.

The disk is only 80gb (new).

It has not been formatted.

It does not seem to make a sound - no spin up.

Can't thank you enough for your help - im entering into a world of despair after hours of getting no where!

OK, is this a 3 1/2" desktop HDD in the caddy?

Ok, don't take offence but just to rule things out - you do have the power supply for the caddy attached and powered up?

Can you see a model or part number on the caddy?

download this m8 it will format your drive and set it up for you its what i use for everysingle one of my drives, called disc wizard for windows, just type in your email and your good to go

No worries - power a fair question!

Although there is no "spin sound" the LEDs have lit up. There is some talk of whether this supply sufficient power for all HDs, but this only reqiures 0.56A 12V.

Have already tried diskwizard - it detects a USB mass storage device, but does not format it. It just leaps immediately to 100% complete.

Wondering about trying a drive i know works in the caddy, but am scared of loosing data......

I'd be tempted to see if your PC will recognise it as an internal disk. Do you have a free IDE connector internally you could try?

My main rig has gone down - the monitor is switching itself off. Ive removed and re-seated the graphics card, but the problem remains with two different monitors.

Will try the new external one in another rig, and an established disk in the enclosure.

For lengthy and not very interesting reasons i've been unable to try the newly recieved hard disk internally.

The disk which has all the music i wish to transfer to my Ipod spins when connected to the enclosure.

At least, it is audile - the other could not be silent could it? So DOA?

if you havnt sorted it already, you will need to format the drive before putting it into the caddy, i.e. put the HDD into the computer itself and then fromat it in windows, take it back out and put it back into the caddy
