External HDD and video editing performance?

Hello.
Building new spec for my PC going with X3 720 cpu.
Was wandering about HDD. I've got an 80Gb and will upgrade sooner or later but kinda like the idea of an external HDD.
Question is, will an external HDD like WD My Book/My Passport 500Gb slow down something like video editing if I do it on that drive?

Or are external HDD mainly just for backing up internal HDDs?

Thanks... Frank.

They are mainly used for back-ups really and media storage. If you want to go down that route though you need to make sure it has eSATA or firewire connections, getting a drive with USB will pull down the hard drives speeds to less than half the normal rate.
For what you're wanting to use it for I would have it internally as I'm not sure what benefit you're getting having it on the outside. A 500GB internal drive will also be cheaper.

This drive should suit your needs:

Great drive and a 5 year warranty

Thanks for reply.
That drive looks very good.
I'm thinking of an external HDD because I've got a PS3 and main HD TV downstairs and PC upstairs. I have linked them using homeplugs but don't like to leave these on all the time. I just thought an external HDD could be used for editing and storing my HD camcorder videos etc. Which would be easy to bring downstairs and hook up to PS3 for playback. (I know theres Fat32 issues etc with PS3).

The advice on eSATA is good. Maybe I need to see an external HDD with eSATA for PC connection and USB for PS3. If there is such a thing.... off I go again. :)

Thanks... Frank.

PS I'm not sure if my homeplug setup would be able to stream HD to the PS3 anyway... another reason for external HDD perhaps.

Hmm this seems to fulfill my needs..(Competitors Link DELETED, it was for an external HDD with eSATA/firewire)
It has eSATA and firewire for fast PC connection and USB for PS3 link up.

BUT!!! Will it work OK going between both? Hmm I'm confusing myself more.

I believe my PC running Windows XP is using NFTS and the PS3 can only see FAT32. I think the WD My Book external drives are in FAT32.
So if I hook this drive up to my PC will it see and use it and will my PS3 see and use it too?????

Sheesh me is getting a heed ache!!!

If your PS3 can only see FAT32 then you would have to format it as soon as you get it, although that then stops you being able to have files bigger than 2GB on it. But yes you can use the eSATA on your pc to do what you need and then use the USB for your PS3.

The My Books are perfectly fine as I had a 1TB one for 2 years.

If you don't mind a DIY job you could think about one of these.

Essentially, when it's slotted into your PC it's as good as an internal drive but you can take it out and use it as a USB/eSATA drive with something else.

I've had one for a few months now and it works fine. The dock part can be a bit temperamental depending on the fitting, but I think mine might just be a bit of a dud. The MyBook would be more simple and slightly cheaper, but the IcyBox is a bit tider and means you don't need a power adaptor for it when it's in the PC (it uses internal SATA data and power cables).

Like Casey said though, eSATA is definitely the way to go.

Ooops! Sorry didn't know. PS3 and PC being different formats is a pain! But atleast it eliminates plan A. (knackers to it!)
I want my files to be down at my TV and not streamed from PC upstairs.

Art.. we meet again. You have been replying to my questions on DDR3 memory. Thanks for efforts. I didn't even know that these HDD enclosures existed! Man, I've been out of the loop.
Ok Plan B.
I need a dedicated Media Device like WD TVHD MediaPlayer http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-269-WD this I could hook up an external HDD. Perhaps even a HDD in one of those enclosure thingys. Think I'm narrowing it all down now.

I even bored my wife talking about this last night. Bless her. :D
Thanks again for the replies... Frank.

You may want to edit your post and take the link out to the competitor.

Art's idea seems to be a good one, I totally forgot about them lol. If you wish to add in the media player as well then that's a personal choice and whether you would make use of it.
As for the drive to put in there I would with the Samsung F2, spins slower and therefore cooler and quieter, would still run fast enough for all your needs.
