Hi there!

Just looking for a bit of advice regarding external HDD's for backing up computers. I've decided that I've got way too much important stuff for me not to be backing up, especially as I've been having some HDD trouble recently.

I've got a main computer with 400 gig, along with a laptop which holds around 80 gig.

I'm wondering whether to get two separate external HDD's for each machine, or one very large one for both.

I wouldn't want to do full machine back ups, I'd be quite happy selecting the folders to back up, and I'll be getting Windows to do this on a weekly basis.

The issue is whether to get two separate ones for each machine... Is there any benefit to this or seen as though I just want specific folders backing up will one drive be sufficient for both? I think this is the case but I'm posting here to get your views if possible!

Does anyone have any recommendations for the external drives? I like the look of the Western Digital ones, but I don't have any experience at all with external HDD's and nobody I know has one!

Cheers for any help! :)

all depends on you really.

If you get 1 hard drive for all the data and that hard drive dies - you loose all your data.

If you buy 2 hard drives - then you have to mess about with 2 hard drives all the time

Thanks for the replies!

Is it worth reformatting the drive from fat32 to NTFS once I get the external HDD? I'm hearing a lot about problems with Windows and large files on fat32...

Cheers for any help!
