My recently purchased Gigabyte GA-890GPA-UD3H (running Windows 7) is giving me some bother with my MyBook External drive.. I have connected it using esata to a backplate connector which is connected to a sata port using a third party backplate.. It connects fine when I switch the machine on, however for some reason it keeps disconnecting after a what seems to be a random number of minutes, even while using the disk to copy from. This seems to be a common problem with external drives (have been googling), however nobody seems to have a solution to this.

I have tried setting the power setting to Never power down HDD's, but its still disconnecting.

Does anybody have useful solution to this? I rather not connect the drive to USB as I recon esata will be a fair bit faster..

Are you using the latest chipset drivers? I had a problem before with a friend's system 'losing' the DVD drive all the time, and it turned out the Intel Chipset driver was to blame. I actually had to use a slightly older driver to sort it out.

Driver would definately be my first thought.
