External HDD Question????

Need more space on desktop, is it possible to buy a external hard drive and still have the capability to run games and itunes etc. off the HDD with no problems and loss of speed?

I'd understand if you said notebook, but why not (simply) upgrade current one to something bigger?

Because im going to be upgrading to a whole new system in a few months so i see no point
